Dropped Catches Costly
A depleted 1st XI travelled to Eastwood with five bowlers missing for one reason or another. As the coin went up, even collective praying didn't work and we were in the field first. Although Eastwood reached 229-7 from 48 overs, considering the resources available this was a fine effort by those who were there. Even the fielding was of a good standard, well the ground fielding anyway. The less said about the catching the better! Depending on who you to talk to the dropped catch count ranged anywhere between 9 & 37! some of these being absolute dollies. Three wickets for Bilal, two for Billy & Scotty & Callum Jayes putting in a sterling shift with the ball & we settled down for a sumptuous tea. Harry & Matt Dean opened the innings but it wasn't long before they both returned to the Pav. The Skipper & his predecessor then put a few on before Scotty perished. Cal & Rich then had a good partnership which put us back in with a shout until they both fell in quick succession along with Bill. We were now in a pickle. The target was a long way off & six wickets were gone. Eddie & Picko held firm until Eddie was adjudged LBW which brought Bilal to the crease. Despite a lot of largely good natured banter, Bilal held his nerve & together with Picko batted the overs out for the draw as the innings closed on 150-7. Seven points claimed, it could have been so much more - catching practice required.
MOM Bilal, fine spell of bowling & held his nerve at the end.
Tremendous Tie at GLA
The 2nd XI played host to East Bridgford & were involved in a terrific tussle. Batting first, Calvo got off to a good start & with telling contributions from Jarrod Bell (60) & Kevin Evans (78*), a total of 206-4 was posted off 45 overs. The East Bridgford reply was bizarre to say the least as almost all the batsmen batted as if they need 407 to win! 35-0 off 5 became 44-4 & 70 odd for 5 & the game looked to be in the bag. But more lusty hitting saw E.B needing just 10 to win with 4 wickets remaining & still with plenty of overs left. Amazingly E.B tried to finish the game off with 2 hits & paid the ultimate price as Ryan & Kevin Evans took 3 quick wickets and E.B were bowled out with the scores level! Fourteen more valuable points for Nesters troops who now sit comfortably in mid table.
MOM Ryan Evans, 2 late wickets turned the game.
The 1st XI came unstuck at bottom of the table Gedling & Sherwood. Having first use of a tired track should have been beneficial, but it was not to be. After a steady start in which most of the batters had starts, only Harry Bhaker (77*) went on & with the help of a few lusty blows from Michael Nester (27), a 48 over total of 183-7 was reached. A par score which, given the slowness of the wicket, should have been defendable. Despite a couple of early wickets, too many four balls were bowled and G & S made speedy progress towards the target. With 60 odd required & eight wickets still in hand, victory should have been a formality, but the hosts tried to be generous to their visitors! Two fine catches from Callum Jayes & a couple of wickets for the Rock Lobster saw us back into the game. When Michael Nester took 2 in 2 balls an unlikely victory looked possible. Despite trying their hardest to chuck the game away, G & S held on & secured a 2 wicket victory, six points being taken from the game.
MOM Harry Bhaker
Sunday Washed Out Too.
Both the first Kwik cricket tournament of the season & the tour fixture against Harrogate fell foul of the weather. There is a possibility that the Under 11's can be re-scheduled for July.
Both Games Off
The 1st XI game at home to Belvoir and the 2nd XI game at Kirkby Portland, have both been cancelled due to the persistent overnight rain.
Fingers crossed that the weather improves (although the forecast is not good) in time for tomorrow when GLA is due to host the first Under 11 Kwik cricket tournament of the summer(!) - 10am start. Although there is no Sunday League game tomorrow, we have a fixture against Harrogate CC who are on tour, 1.30pm start - weather permitting.
Tonight's 'social evening' will go ahead as planned, although an earlier start is optional! 9pm in The Borlase Warren for those who can't make it earlier.
Saturday 6th June
Has been declared a serious social evening!
Although final details have yet to be decided, the evening will kick off around 9pm in the Sir John Borlase Warren, Canning Circus. Further hostelries will be determined on the night but are likely to feature The Hand & Heart, The Ropewalk & numerous others.
Be there or be square & remember to enjoy drink responsibly (ish!).
2 Wins, 1 Draw
As the good weather continued, a weekend highlighted by excellent individual performances resulted in victories for the 2nd XI & Sunday XI and the 1sts secured a draw at Long Eaton.
At GLA the 2nds entertained Long Eaton & were boosted by another Father & Son partnership making their 'debuts' for Calverton in a competitive game. Kevin & Ryan Evans became the latest pairing as proud Grandparents & Mum looked on. Skipper John Nester was all smiles as he won the toss & had no hesitation in batting on a glorious day. After a decent start, wickets began to tumble all too regularly, but Coach Leafe (54) & Dad Evans (61) made sure a competitive total was posted. 193-8 from 45 overs certainly gave the bowlers something to work with. Coach 2 then produced an inspired spell of bowling , Dickon bowling 10 overs on the reel taking 5-22 assisted by Brinsley Kirkham with an equally good spell taking 3-32 from 10 overs. Long Eaton were never in the hunt & were eventually bowled out for 134 securing 20 points for Nesters boys.
MOM Dickon Perry, classic swing bowling.
In the reverse fixture, the 1sts travelled to West Park, Long Eaton & were in the field first. Despite a couple of early wickets, Long Eaton were soon in the driving seat and looked set to post a huge score with almost 150 on the board & just 3 wickets down. But a delicious serving of pies were tossed down by the Pieman as Pete Crawley returned admirable figures of 6-53 from 16 overs. With nine wickets eventually being taken and four bowling points secured, a target of 236 wasn't too bad. Rich Lee took the Pieman out with him to open the innings & a solid foundation was laid. However, in the finest Calvo tradition 90-0 became 110-5 & any chance of winning evaporated. But fifties from the Skipper & Scotty saw the innings close on 173-7 & three batting points gained to go with two for the draw and nine in total.
MOM Peter Pieman
Sunday saw East Bridgford visit GLA as the 'heatwave' continued. Once again, Eddie proved what a poor tosser he is as his boys were subjected to fielding first - they needn't have worried. Despite the openers putting on 32 for the first wicket, the roof fell in on the Bridgford innings with wickets falling like ninepins! The destroyer in chief being Billy Bennett who claimed the remarkable figure of 5-9 from 5 overs, well bowled young man. After just 22 overs, that was that as E.B were bowled out for just 81. The abrupt conclusion caught the Tea preparers out & Calvo's innings commenced with Chris Cooke & Matt Dean getting us off to a good start. Although Cookey perished for 18 & Kyle & Willy didn't trouble the scorers unduly, Matt (31) was there till the end & with Brinsley belting three fours, a comfortable 7 wicket victory was recorded.
MOM Billy Bennett, inspired spell.
Committee Meeting - **** Change of Date ****
Please be aware that June's Committee Meeting will now be held on Tuesday 2nd, 7.30pm at the ground and not Wednesday 3rd as previously arranged.
Southwell Slaughtered!
Fear no more Mr Phil, Calvo are back with a bang!
As summer finally made an appearance at GLA, the Division A table toppers from Southwell paid a visit and left following a good hiding.
Following a week of dodgy weather and bearing in mind the ground was semi waterlogged on Thursday, the playing area looked a picture and the wicket was surprisingly firm. Southwell had first use and what a difference it made having a bowling attack! Mark Haseman & Jack Kirk shared the new ball and a tight opening spell soon put the Southwell openers under pressure to increase the scoring rate. Harry then pulled off a remarkable run out. As the ball was drilled back towards him, he swooped, picked up the ball & hurled it back from whence it came uprooting the stump as the Southwell batsman struggled in vain to get back in his crease. This seemed to lift the whole team as the fielding was superb and this pressure transferred itself into wickets for Haseman, Kirk & Michael Nester who all bowled superbly as the visitors tumbled not helped by certain strokes straight out of the Calvo coaching manual! Only the returning C.B managed to stay at the crease for any length of time (a worthwhile feat considering what a poor wicket it was!!!). As tea beckoned the Southwell innings limped along to 123 all out. Half the job was done.
Despite Eddie not staying with his brother for too long, the rest of the batsman (who were needed), lead ably by Billy Armstrong who struck a fine 61, had no problems in reaching the meagre target. The wicket must have got easier, or maybe, just maybe, the batsman were better and the opposing bowlers not as penetrative. Whatever, twenty points is twenty points and well deserved as well, as a six wicket victory was achieved with 16 overs still remaining.
MOM Mark Haseman (closely followed by Jack, Duke & Billy).
