'Calvo Police' Win Thriller
Seven members of the Club represented the Notts Police yesterday (30th May) in the first round of the National Police Knockout Cup. Faced with a difficult draw away to last years runners up Staffordshire, a tough game was in prospect - and so it proved. Batting first on a damp wicket, Staffordshire made a good start moving on to 67-1 off 18 overs; enter Darren Walker making his umpteenth comeback! After his 9 over spell was completed, the total was 76-5 from 26 overs, with 'Dazzler' recording figures of 4-13. Staffs recovered somewhat to post a competitive 149 all out just short of their allotted 45 overs, the remaining wickets being shared between Steve 'Big Bird' Thornhill, Dan 'Not so Hostile' Holloway, Captain 'Creepy' Crawley & Jason Caunt. The Notts reply got off to a disastrous start as 3 early wickets fell to leave the score on 19-3 from 6 overs. A 'repair act' followed with DFD digging in & Derek Pickering hitting 39 in his usual fashion as the partnership gleaned 57 valuable runs. DFD then fell LBW & Picko was also sawn-off to a dubious L.B decision. With Jason Caunt then running himself out the score again tottered on 80-6. Another 'repair act' then followed involving Chris 'Windy' Miller and Daz Walker as the total edged towards the target. However, on 119, Daz was bowled & 'Hostile' didn't trouble the scorers falling first ball. 119-8 with 5 overs to go looked a tall order, but 'Windy' was still there. He was joined by Mark (remember him) Haseman who was reminded which end of the bat to hold before he went out to bat! Considering Mark has played no cricket for some time - you couldn't tell. As the nerves in the pav frayed & nails were bitten, the target got nearer & nearer with 'Big Bird' Thornhill looking ready to 'proverbial his pants' as the last man in! But............He wasn't needed as Windy (49 not out) and Mark 'it was never in doubt' Haseman (15 not out) seeing us home with 5 balls remaining. A thrilling victory, which will now see the 'Boys in Blue' take on North Wales at Calverton probably on Wednesday 28th June.
Friendly Fixture - Result.
With no Sunday League game this week, Calverton entertained Dorchester in a friendly fixture. Having won the toss, Matt Wright decided to bat first on the new artificial strip. Now Matt is better known for his bowling prowess, but decided to open the batting along with Callum Jayes. Both profited well with Matt out in the 80's & Callum posting a half century. With Derek Pickering bludgeoning his way to a half century & Tom Hodgkinson hitting a rapid 40 odd, a total of 269-4 off 40 overs seemed plenty. As it transpired it was enough, but the bowling & fielding display left a lot to be desired! Dorchester being bowled out some 60 odd runs short of the target.
Batting collapse costs 2nd XI
The 2nd XI fell to their second successive defeat at home to Hucknall II yesterday. Hucknall batted first on a damp wicket and got off to a good start, making their way to 64-1 off 15 overs. But thanks to a tight spell of bowling from Matt Rankin & Ian Wright the visitors were pegged back somewhat mid innings. Dickon Perry claimed 3 late wickets in front of watching former Club Captain Alan Dixon, as Hucknall posted a respectable 163 - 7 from their allotted 42 overs. In reply we didn't get off to the best of starts as Jarrod Bell fell lbw with the score on just 18. Wickets continued to tumble during our run chase, but thanks to 45 from Danny Winwood and 32 from Mark Roberts we got ourselves back into the game. Unfortunately the run chase was in vain as we fell 22 runs short of our victory target. Full match details can be viewed on the fixtures/results page.
Rick 2 Quick - Harry 2 Mean!
The 1st XI travelled to Bottesford on an overcast drizzly lunchtime for what looked like another fruitless day. However, the rain relented and a 78 over game belatedly got underway, with 'Captain Scott' calling correctly & inserting the hosts. A splendid display of bowling & fielding was to follow as Bottesford were restricted to 126-9 from 39 overs. Tim 'Harry' Haines returned the miserly figures of 2-15 from 13 overs (2 over par!), Rick '2 Quick' Considine was introduced into the attack in the 15th over on his 1st XI league debut and dismantled the Bottesford batting with 5-37 from 13 overs. Backed up by 4 catches from Rich Lee & an excellent all round fielding display, 126 was a total which would have been settled for before play began. 'Creepy' & 'Beefy' (not Willow & Stumpy!) gave us a solid start putting on 34 for the 1st wicket until 2 rather dubious LBW decisions saw them both back in the 'Pav'. But Derek Pickering & 'Captain Scott' shared a 60 run partnership taking the score to 100 before a 'bit of a wobble' saw Calvo win the game by 3 wickets with 3 overs in hand. Full scorecard available on fixtures/results page.

Cope Cup Result
The Cope Cup campaign got under way on a 'sticky dog' at home to East Bridgford. Having won the toss, Matt Wright lead a young Calverton side onto the field including the welcome sight of Billy Armstrong making his first appearance since breaking his leg. It was a good night for Billy as he took 3 wickets, there were also 2 wickets each for Matt Wright, Tom Wright & the 'not so young' Tim Haines! East Bridgford were bowled out for 86 in the 16th and final over of the innings. In reply Calverton stormed to a convincing 9 wicket victory with the 'Old Toilet' Derek Pickering hammering 38 (according to the scorebook) & Ian Wright apparently outscoring the 'Toilet' with 45! Meanwhile in the scorebox, scorer Brinsley was gorging himself on chocolate & pop bought for him by...........................Ian Wright!
Sunday XI Gain Revenge.
The Sunday XI made the trip to Southwell in the Newark Alliance looking to avenge the defeat suffered by the 2nd XI yesterday at the hands of Southwell and did so with a vengeance. Skipper Matt Wright won the toss and batted and many eyebrows were raised as Mark (I'm normally number 10) Roberts & Rich Lee strode to the wicket. What a decision! 145 runs later Rich Lee was dismissed for a solid half century with Robbo still at the wicket. Despite a nervous time in the 80's, 'Robbo' was eased thru to his maiden century by the 'old toilet' Derek Pickering who clubbed a rapid 32 at the other end. Congratulations to Robbo on a marvelous innings as the Calverton score sped passed 200. In reply the Southwell innings never got going. A 'mean' spell by 'Matty Nonfor' & wickets for Ian Wright (four), Tom Smithies (3) & Rick (who was too quick) Considine (2), saw Southwell fail to reach 100 & a comfortable victory was recorded.
2nd XI run chase in vain
An excellent game of cricket was played at GLA on a damp and dreary May afternoon. Chris Miller won the toss and elected to bowl first. Calverton were off to a great start when Danny Winwood held a fantastic catch after Mark Roberts found the inside edge of Southwell's opening batsmen Tom Foster's bat with the score on just one. But the visitors then began to to find the boundary at regular intervals including a big hitting over of 32 from Southwell's John Scott. Calverton were set a testing 251 to win off 40 overs. Chris Miller hit his first half-century as Captain and a well crafted innings of 47 from Jamie Taylor was not enough as we fell 21 runs short of our victory target. On another day with a fraction more luck the result may have been different !!. Full match details can be found on the Fixtures/Results page.
1st XI Rained Off
The 1st XI didn't even get to Collingham as overnight & Saturday morning rain put paid to their Division A fixture. The game was called off at 11.30am, thus saving a gallon or two of petrol!
Sunday Game Off
The scheduled Newark Alliance home game against Madni has been cancelled due to rain.
Positive Cricket = Positive Result
The 1st XI began their league campaign at home to Plumtree. Skipper Scott Andrew had no hesitation in batting on a super wicket and despite the best efforts of the weather, a winning draw was achieved. Scott lead the way with 74 and all the other batsmen made good contributions. However, the rain began to fall at 3.45pm with Calverton on 198-3 from 36 overs. An early tea was taken & the rule book studied. It became apparent that a bold & positive move needed to be made or the likelehood was that the game wouldn't finish due to bad light. Just over an hour later Calverton's innings resumed & 6 overs later 'Captain Scott' called his team in with the total on 244-5 from 42 overs, giving Plumtree 54 overs to bat. A gamble? - maybe, but a masterstroke. Calverton 'raced' through their overs, bowling all 54 in just 2 hours & 50 minutes as Plumtree's innings closed on 222-5. The 'evergreen' Tim Haines bowling 18 unchanged overs taking 2-36 being the pick of the bowlers. Full scorecard can be found on the fixtures/results page.
Perry shines as 2nd XI clinch victory
Dickon Perry claimed career best figures for Calverton CC as the 2nd XI forced their way over the winning line in the gloom at Risley. Captain Chris Miller lost the toss and Calverton were asked to bowl first on a rain interrupted afternoon. Risley made a good start and were 80-2 off 24 overs when the heavens opened. After a 90 minute rain delay, Risley were then skittled out for 120 thanks to Perry's heroics and 3 wickets from Matt Rankin. Calverton's run chase was not without alarm as we were restricted to 82-5 at one stage. But vital contributions of 28 from Jarrod Bell and 23 not out from John 'Coach' Leafe saw the visitors claim an opening League victory. Highlight of the day was a huge straight six from Jarrod Bell which sailed out of the ground and clattered into the central reservation on the A52 !!. Full match details can be viewed on the fixtures/results page.
