Sunday XI Finish Season in Fine Style

The Newark Alliance campaign ended with another victory this time over already relegated Southwell on a gorgeous day at GLA.

With Balderton having beaten Radcliffe on Trent last week, the title dreams were over with a 2nd or 3rd place the likely finishing position. Once again availability was an issue, & an unbalanced looking line-up took to the field for Calverton; good bowling options, but not a lot of batting.

Rick gave his 'Discopants' one final airing before putting them away for the winter, to great effect claiming the top three of the Southwell order. With Tim Haines helping the Club out with a Sunday appearance claiming a wicket & Tom Wright another, Southwell at one time were struggling on 61-5. However, a recovery was put into place by Matt Davis (50*) & George Bowie (25) as Southwell strived to post a competitive total. Despite this partnership, skipper Matt Wright stuck to his principles as he has for most of the season, giving the youngsters Will Wright & Tom Smithies a bowl, with Tom claiming a wicket. Southwell's innings eventually closing on a respectable 162-7 off 40 overs. Highlights of the fielding display were Matt's awesome catch & Scotty dropping yet another absolute dolly!

Following a splendid Colleen tea (mmm love the Garlic Bread), Rich Lee & Scott Andrew opened up the Calverton innings. Much depended on these two & the Wright brothers as the batting was a 'bit thin on the ground' today. The first 9 overs yielded 42 runs with few alarms; until 'Flea' decided he'd had enough for this season and missed a straight one & was duly bowled. Skipper Matt joined Scotty in a determined mood, but soon afterwards Scotty also departed giving the fielders some catching practice (only this fielder caught it!). Jordan Jackson joined Matt & the score edged along to 74 when Jordan was bowled, bringing Ian to join brother Matt at the wicket. Now normally 90 to win off 22 overs with 7 wickets in hand shouldn't be too much of a problem; and so it proved. Matt, despite not having had the best of seasons with the bat, batted splendidly with some spanking cover drives and Ian clubbed his way to a fine fifty, this despite Southwell posting 4 square legs & 4 mid wickets in an effort to stem the flow of boundaries from Ian's bat! With just 8 required to win, Ian was out for 52 made off just 55 balls, leaving Tom Hubbard & Matt to finish the job, which they duly did, Matt ending up on 56 not out as the target was achieved with 6 overs remaining.

It's quite fitting really that Matt was there at the end. This has been a great season for the Sunday XI & for Matt as captain. The last few weeks have been a real headache to get 11 out on the field but somehow 11 were found & despite their 'tender ages' can be proud of their efforts. So, depending on how Pakistan fair over there remaining couple of games, we will finish 2nd or 3rd this season.........

Well done!

Sunday XI Win in Run Fest Thriller!

Calverton managed to do to Pakistan what England have so far failed to achieve - winning a one day game this despite several of the team again nursing hangovers from the previous nights frivolities in Town.

Having won the toss, Matt decided we would have a bowl first on what looked to be a good track at GLA, not one of 'Rons Roads' but 'Pedros Pavements'! Initially all went well with Matt claiming the scalps of both openers cheaply. Wickets continued to fall steadily & at one stage Pakistan were tottering on 116-7 with 14 overs remaining. However, Pakistans number 3 batsmen Tanveer Ahmed was still there and looking good. He was still there in the 40th over eventually being caught with 2 balls of the innings remaining for 136 as Pakistans innings closed on 229.
Highlights in the field included 'Rock Lobster' actually catching the ball! Not only did he catch one, he resembled a 'leaping salmon' as the wee man soared through the air before plucking the ball out of the air one handed - truly remarkable (truly unfortunate for the batsman concerned!). Tom Wright was without doubt the pick of the bowlers taking 4-30 off 8 excellent overs. Matt & Rick took the other wickets to fall between them.

After a splendid tea lovingly prepared by Mike 'I'm now a tea lady' Sewell (see we've found a use for him!), Calvo's innings began in the knowledge that we had to win to keep our faint title hopes alive.

We couldn't have got off to a better start as the Wee man still beaming from that catch & Flea (also beaming after taking 2 superb stumpings) put on 85 for the first wicket in 15 overs, including a 30 minute break for rain. The wee man perished for 38 and with Billy not hanging around for long the score became 89-2. Flea was still looking solid at the other end and together with Liam Andrews they added a further 64 for the third wicket. Liam fell for 28, which brought a hobbling Pedro to the crease. Flea's splendid innings came to an end on 73 with a tame chip to extra cover and Jamie Taylor joined Pedro with 10 overs remaining & 73 runs required. There were no further alarms as Pedro clubbed a few mighty blows ending on 57 not out from 37 balls and JT a valuable 18 not out from 16 balls & victory was recorded with 10 balls left.

So the title dream is still alive (well it is if Radcliffe managed to defeat Balderton today) and we look forward to the final game of the season next Sunday at home to Southwell.

2nd XI Promoted..........Again!

The 2nd XI rounded off their Division E campaign against Stanton & Awsworth by securing promotion to Division D.
A delayed start (2.30pm) saw the game reduced to 36 overs per side and having lost the toss Calverton were inserted. Callum Jayes struck 46 supported by Chris Miller 26 and other scores in the teens saw a total of 146-7 posted off the allotted overs. Stanton needed 20 points at the outset to avoid relegation, but as Calverton only lost 7 wickets this was impossible. As tea was taken, further rain fell and the game was abandoned.
Regardless of what Underwood do today, or next week in their final game, they cannot catch Calverton. Well done to 'Windy' and the boys on a super season and another promotion.

1st XI's League programme ends with rain

The final Division A match of the season at home to Eastwood has been called off due to the extensive rain over the last 48 hours.
Despite strenuous efforts by the groundstaff in getting GLA into some semblance of order by Friday, more overnight rain & early Saturday rain, put paid to the fixture.
Congratulations to Scott Andrew in his first season as Captain leading the side to the 'coveted Runners Up' position. Furthermore, the season has been immensely enjoyable & played in a great spirit. Well done!
