1st's Sign Off In Style
Despite having little to play for but pride & second place in the league, the 1st XI completed their Saturday league programme with a winning draw at home to relegation threatened Ellerslie in Division A of the SNCL. At the start of the day, eyes were being cast around the home dressing room wondering who an earth was going to bowl! With DFD gone in the knee & Creepy gone to work, getting 48 overs out of the 11 clothed personnel on duty may well prove to be problematic. This was obviously on Scotty's mind as he skipped out to the middle to play the flipperty coin game with 'Eddie'. When Scotty realised he'd been victorious, electing to bat was an obvious decision as it gave him an extra few hours to devise a cunning bowling strategy. So, Flea & Hodgo opened the innings & runs proved difficult to come by. Hodgo returned to the Pav in the 8th over closely followed by Eddie & Cal. When Flea was out for 28 the total stood on 66-4 but the returning old stager Chris Miller shared a good partnership with Captain Scott taking the score over a hundred before Scotty was adjudged to be run out (no gags about little legs please!). When Ginger Bill ran passed one to be stumped & Windy decided that 50 was enough & chipped a catch to a fielder, things were looking rather bleak on 141-7. Harry Haines then joined Picko, who had started his innings with the usual flourish, and together they took the score to 188 with 2 overs to go before Picko holed out going for another big hit. 'Little Willy' joined Harry for the final blast & the innings closed on a creditable 197-8............but at what cost? Hainsey limped off the field with an alleged hamstring injury. Now anybody who witnessed 'Hobbling Harry' would argue that he was obviously in pain, but a hamstring?? most observers were surprised he'd got any! In Harry's defence he was clutching the rear of his leg near the top which is the general area where a hamstring is located, although that is also the area where piles can hang! - You decide! Whilst tea was being taken, Scotty seemed to be on the verge of tears. Our already decimated bowling attack now consisted of a one legged man, Ginger Bill (at least he was fit), 2 wicket keepers & the Captain himself. Still Ellerslie's team only contained probably the best batsmen in the league - this could be fun! Ginger Bill galloped down the hill & Hainsey hobbled up it & after 4 relatively boring overs the score was 8-0. Over five saw the cat set loose amongst the pigeons! Billy was clobbered into the oss field by Samrat for 6 & collective groans could be heard on the field. But this was obviously all part of Bill's cunning plan as he fed Samrat a wide half volley which he somehow managed to drag back a yard into his stumps. Cue delirium! With Hainsy & Scotty picking up a wicket apiece, 22 overs passed with the score on 63-3. Hainsey bowled (somehow) is allotted 16 overs for just 33 runs and was replaced by the equally mobile Picko for his first bowl of the season ('bout time to!). With the score having progressed to 132-3 & 10 overs remaining, an Ellerslie victory seemed the most likely outcome. However, Billy & Picko had other ideas and the next 7 overs yielded 6 wickets for 35 runs with Bill claiming 5 of the wickets to fall & catching the other one off one of Picko's 'moon balls'. Ellerslie's innings closed on 172-9 & 8 points for a losing draw - would this be enough to keep them up? As news of the other results began to filter through, it became apparent that Ellerslie had not beaten the drop. Commiserations to them & best wishes for a speedy return to Division A. As for Calvo, well what can you say. Runners Up two years on the trot. If somebody had said at the start of May Calverton will finish second, they'd probably have been carted off in a yellow van! It must be said that Scotty has done a tremendous job again this season, some of the younger lads have enjoyed a taste of first team cricket & the games have been played (well when it didn't rain) in an excellent spirit. MOM - Ginger Bill 6-47 off 14 overs, great effort. Well done to everyone, well done.
