Saturday 6th June

Has been declared a serious social evening!

Although final details have yet to be decided, the evening will kick off around 9pm in the Sir John Borlase Warren, Canning Circus. Further hostelries will be determined on the night but are likely to feature The Hand & Heart, The Ropewalk & numerous others.

Be there or be square & remember to enjoy drink responsibly (ish!).

2 Wins, 1 Draw

As the good weather continued, a weekend highlighted by excellent individual performances resulted in victories for the 2nd XI & Sunday XI and the 1sts secured a draw at Long Eaton.

At GLA the 2nds entertained Long Eaton & were boosted by another Father & Son partnership making their 'debuts' for Calverton in a competitive game. Kevin & Ryan Evans became the latest pairing as proud Grandparents & Mum looked on. Skipper John Nester was all smiles as he won the toss & had no hesitation in batting on a glorious day. After a decent start, wickets began to tumble all too regularly, but Coach Leafe (54) & Dad Evans (61) made sure a competitive total was posted. 193-8 from 45 overs certainly gave the bowlers something to work with. Coach 2 then produced an inspired spell of bowling , Dickon bowling 10 overs on the reel taking 5-22 assisted by Brinsley Kirkham with an equally good spell taking 3-32 from 10 overs. Long Eaton were never in the hunt & were eventually bowled out for 134 securing 20 points for Nesters boys.

MOM Dickon Perry, classic swing bowling.

In the reverse fixture, the 1sts travelled to West Park, Long Eaton & were in the field first. Despite a couple of early wickets, Long Eaton were soon in the driving seat and looked set to post a huge score with almost 150 on the board & just 3 wickets down. But a delicious serving of pies were tossed down by the Pieman as Pete Crawley returned admirable figures of 6-53 from 16 overs. With nine wickets eventually being taken and four bowling points secured, a target of 236 wasn't too bad.
Rich Lee took the Pieman out with him to open the innings & a solid foundation was laid. However, in the finest Calvo tradition 90-0 became 110-5 & any chance of winning evaporated. But fifties from the Skipper & Scotty saw the innings close on 173-7 & three batting points gained to go with two for the draw and nine in total.

MOM Peter Pieman

Sunday saw East Bridgford visit GLA as the 'heatwave' continued. Once again, Eddie proved what a poor tosser he is as his boys were subjected to fielding first - they needn't have worried. Despite the openers putting on 32 for the first wicket, the roof fell in on the Bridgford innings with wickets falling like ninepins! The destroyer in chief being Billy Bennett who claimed the remarkable figure of 5-9 from 5 overs, well bowled young man. After just 22 overs, that was that as E.B were bowled out for just 81. The abrupt conclusion caught the Tea preparers out & Calvo's innings commenced with Chris Cooke & Matt Dean getting us off to a good start. Although Cookey perished for 18 & Kyle & Willy didn't trouble the scorers unduly, Matt (31) was there till the end & with Brinsley belting three fours, a comfortable 7 wicket victory was recorded.

MOM Billy Bennett, inspired spell.

Southwell Slaughtered!

Fear no more Mr Phil, Calvo are back with a bang!

As summer finally made an appearance at GLA, the Division A table toppers from Southwell paid a visit and left following a good hiding.

Following a week of dodgy weather and bearing in mind the ground was semi waterlogged on Thursday, the playing area looked a picture and the wicket was surprisingly firm. Southwell had first use and what a difference it made having a bowling attack! Mark Haseman & Jack Kirk shared the new ball and a tight opening spell soon put the Southwell openers under pressure to increase the scoring rate. Harry then pulled off a remarkable run out. As the ball was drilled back towards him, he swooped, picked up the ball & hurled it back from whence it came uprooting the stump as the Southwell batsman struggled in vain to get back in his crease. This seemed to lift the whole team as the fielding was superb and this pressure transferred itself into wickets for Haseman, Kirk & Michael Nester who all bowled superbly as the visitors tumbled not helped by certain strokes straight out of the Calvo coaching manual! Only the returning C.B managed to stay at the crease for any length of time (a worthwhile feat considering what a poor wicket it was!!!). As tea beckoned the Southwell innings limped along to 123 all out. Half the job was done.

Despite Eddie not staying with his brother for too long, the rest of the batsman (who were needed), lead ably by Billy Armstrong who struck a fine 61, had no problems in reaching the meagre target. The wicket must have got easier, or maybe, just maybe, the batsman were better and the opposing bowlers not as penetrative. Whatever, twenty points is twenty points and well deserved as well, as a six wicket victory was achieved with 16 overs still remaining.

MOM Mark Haseman (closely followed by Jack, Duke & Billy).

Weather Wins...........And So Do The 2nd's!

The British weather took just three weeks to make it's mark on the cricket season, but it couldn't stop the 2nd XI from recording there first victory of the season.

At GLA the 1st's hosted Balderton, but just 8 overs were possible and after four interruptions for rain the game was abandoned at 3.40pm.

The Sunday XI were due to host Clumber Park, but further heavy downpours around lunchtime put paid to the game without a ball being bowled.

Down at Lenton, however, it was a different story as John Nester lead his men (and boys) to a tremendous victory. What took 3 months to achieve last year, took just 3 weeks to achieve this year.

With the boundaries having been pulled in a few miles from last week & the pungent aroma of burning cars (?) from the Clifton area now extinguished, it was an altogether more pleasurable experience (enhanced by the win of course!). With the game being reduced to 35 overs per side, Calverton, batting first, looked to DFD & Head Coach to get us off to a good start (well one can always hope!). The Coach raced to thirty & with Michael Nester top scoring with 52 & Jarrod Bell, Bilal Waheed & The Skipper chipping in, a total of 176-7 was always going to be competitive.

John Nester then gambled by using his opening bowlers straight through their allotted spells of 8 overs each in order to up the run rate & leave Unity a mountain to climb. Although Dickon nor Nester Jnr managed to take a wicket, their 16 overs only yielded 30 runs putting Calvo in the box seat. The support bowlers then began to take wickets at regular intervals despite some horrendous efforts to catch the little red pill. Kyle Welch was on a hat trick at one point & ended up with 3 wickets, with Bilal & Raj taking 2 apiece with the innings closing on 145-8 when the overs ran out.

Well done to one & all, hopefully the first of many.

MOM Michael Nester, hard hitting fifty & tight spell of bowling.

Saturday Losses, Sunday Victory

The opening league encounters on Saturday resulted in defeats for both the 1st & 2nd teams, but the Sunday XI notched up a victory in the Newark Aliance.

Radcliffe On Trent were the (morning) visitors to GLA on a dry bright day with the ground looking a picture & the wicket firm & true. Skipper Rich Lee proved what a promising tosser he could become by winning it & inserting the opposition. Despite Ginger Bill taking an early wicket in the only 2 overs he managed to bowl before succumbing to injury (again), Radcliffe made good progress moving serenely on to 80-1 from 18 overs. The introduction of the spin twins Pete Crawley & young Matt Dean saw the scoring rate slow & wickets began to fall & what looked like a total of 250 plus, became 205-7 from 48 overs. Hats off to both of them for an inspired spell of bowling.

With a strong looking batting line up (on paper), 206 should have been well within reach. Harry opened up with the creaking Picko & the usual frenzied assault on Waaaardy saw the score zoom to 25 by the end of the second over! The rest of the innings can be summed up as shocking shots & dubious decisions as 20 odd for none became 60 odd for 5 in the blink of an eye. Ginger Bill & Flea steadied the ship & put us back in with a shout until an impromptu time out on the field of play (must be a new rule) saw Bill succumb to one of the shocking shots. The Skipper remained unbeaten to the end but ran out of partners as the innings fizzled out 50 odd shy of the target. Still, there was plenty of room in the bar for some ale!!!

MOM The Spin Twins.

Over at Wymeswold the Seconds batted first on a slow green seamer. A disastrous start saw four wickets fall very early, but 32 from Coach Leafe & 22 from Michael Nester added some respectability. With Jordan Jackson & Dickon Perry getting into the teens, a total of 110 was posted.

Three early wickets, before the reply had reached 30, had raised the hopes, but they were in vain. Bilal (The Wicket Machine) continued where he left off last weekend with 3 more wickets, with one a piece for Brinsley & Nester jnr. Unfortunately that was it & Wymeswold eased to a five wicket victory.

MOM Bilal

Gotham visited GLA for the opening Newark Alliance fixture with the wind blowing in from Siberia! The new Sunday Skipper proved what we all thought, he isnt as good a tosser as his bro as Ed & returned to the Pav to pass on the news that we were to field first. After much chuntering Eds lads took to the field & the visitors were soon in trouble as Bilal (this bowling lark is easy) & Nester jnr, reduced Gotham to 17-3 off 8 overs. However, a big stand of 132 between Jones & Brown put the visitors back in the game & it was an inspired piece of Captaincy that turned the game back in the hosts favour. With bowling options fast running out, Ed tossed the ball to Picko who was well weighted down by 3 sweaters & refused to remove one of them. The unfortunate Jones, who had moved on to 99, then belted one to long on where Ginger Bill pouched a simple catch. Thank the Lord the Captain wasnt under it!! With The Wicket Machine back on at the top end, Gotham collapsed spectacularly, ending on 173-9 from 40 overs. Five more wickets for Bilal saw his seasons tally reach 17 already.

DFD making a rare Sunday appearance, received what (he described) as "ball of the day" & was promptly on his way back to the warmth of the bar. In fairness it was a good Yorker. When Cookey soon followed with just 9 on the board, things looked a little dodgy. But Ed will tell you (well anyone that will listen to him), all was under control. And so it proved. The most injury prone man in the village was ushered out into the middle & played shots all around the wicket. Whilst Matt Dean at one end looked solid, Ginger Bill thrashed the ball to all parts as 84 were added in no time. The only other casualty during the innings was Matt Dean which brought the Skipper to the crease. A further 83 were added by Billy & Ed as Billy registered the first ton of the season & the target was passed with 16 overs to spare.

MOM The 2 Billeeees
