Season Underway

The early start to the 1st XI season caught them napping! With players on holiday & committed with football, an under strength team were put to the sword by Clifton.

On a beautiful sunny day & with GLA looking resplendent, Clifton batted first and soon began building an impressive innings. Its fair to say that the fielding left a little to be desired as did some of the bowling. Had it not been for Billy Armstrong (6-59) and, promoted from the 2nd team, Dickon Perry (3-74), it could have been a whole lot worse. At tea Clifton were bowled out for 266.

It would be fair to say, the opening few overs aside, that Calverton were never in the hunt, with only Richard Lee putting up much resistance as wickets were tossed away by some poor shots. A final total of 117 was some considerable distance short.

Onwards and upwards.

MOM Easy, Billy Armstrong.

The Newark Alliance campaign also got underway with a trip to West Bridgford. With the average age bolstered somewhat with the inclusion of wrinklies Nester and Pickering, Rich Lees boys started the season on a winning note.

Batting first, openers Nester & Kirkham were soon back in the Pav without unduly worrying the scorers, but fresh from Saturdays heroics with the ball, Ginger Bill (or is it Billie) & Scotty A set about repairing the innings with a well constructed partnership of 150. By tea, 203-7 had been posted, enough to give all the boys a bowl. A see-saw game was finally decided by senior cricket debutant Lewis Wilson who came back on at the death taking the vital wicket of West Bridgfordians number 6 who scored 70. Although Ginger Bill managed 6 overs, all the remaining ones were bowled by the lads. Our opponents finally succumbing 17 runs short.
