FIXTURE CHANGES
Due to some crappy football match this Sunday (27th June) the scheduled Newark Alliance fixture between Calverton & Gotham has been re-arranged.
This game will now take place on Sun 18th July at Calverton. The current fixture on that date (Gotham v Calverton) will now be played on Sun August 1st at Gotham.
The fixtures page & calendar page has been updated accordingly.
Message from an old friend Pete Williams
Hi everyone! Just thought you might like to know that I enjoy reading the website news down here in a very sunny Sussex(though not always!).Currently I'm umpiring in the East Sussex league and on the Sussex ECB panel. Some very attractive venues as I'm sure many of you will remember from the old touring days.I learnt of the ground improvements from John my old colleague from our ground mtnce days.It gives me great pleasure to know that our efforts in the past were not all in vain and that Dick no longer has to coax the roller into life! All the best to everyone and lets see Calverton CC back in the top Divs. Pete Williams
CLEAN SWEEP AT LAST!
It may have taken a few weeks, but the results from the weekend saw all three teams recording victories.
The 1st XI made the short trip to Newstead Village and made light work of registering their first win of the season. A fine all round display in the field backed up by some impressive bowling saw Newstead skittled for a paltry 92. Special mention to Kyle Welch who took three wickets on his first team debut, well done. With Dickon Perry and Brinsley Kirkham also taking three scalps each, an early tea was taken and the sights set on scoring 93 for victory. Surely this would not pose a problem even for Calvos fragile betting. There was no need for worry though as just three batsmen were needed in knocking off the runs with 30 odd overs remaining.
20 much needed points, heady days!
MOM Kyle Welch 3-9 off 7 overs on debut.
The Old and Young combined to propel the Seconds back up the league in a high scoring encounter at GLA.
Batting first on a perfect wicket Coach Leafe and Billy Bennett soon got amongst the Long Eaton bowlers putting on 80 for the first wicket. A mini wobble followed with Michael Nester joining the Pond applicants and Ryan Evans failing with the bat for a change. However, Dad Kevin showed him how to do it and together with Coach another decent partnership followed until the Coach perished for a well crafted 79. Young Will Marris then joined Kevin and another fruitful partnership saw the innings close on 230-6. Kevin finishing on 65, Will 20 not out and Dave Dean following Nester Junior in the Pond application list!
Despite taking three early wickets, Long Eaton were by no means overawed by the task ahead. From 40-3 the fourth wicket added well over a hundred runs and victory was a probability. However the young uns had other ideas. With Captain Nester sunning himself in Spain and Vice Captain Dickon in the Firsts, stand in Skipper Kev Evans marshalled the troops & used his bowlers wisely. Ryan Evans & Will Marris both claimed four scalps each and a collapse of Calvo proportions saw Long Eaton bowled out for 191.
MOM Ryan & Will, great bowling display.
Plumtree Hammered By Sunday XI
On a beautiful warm day, the Sunday XI had first use of the track at Plumtree and made hay in the sunshine. Darren Wright made a quick return to his old stomping ground and stroked his way to a glorious century. With other telling contributions from Billy Bennett, Matt Dean and Kyle Welch, 222-5 was posted from 40 overs. James Toogood then claimed three quick wickets and along with a couple of run outs, Plumtree had lost half their side for 60 odd. They never recovered and were bowled out for just 95. The second sub 100 score of the weekend from our opponents and no apllicants for The Pond, dizzy stuff!
MOM Darren Wright, what a return!
Sunday XI Robbed By Rain
Hucknall Rolls Royce were the visitors to GLA and were thoroughly outplayed for the entire game until the rain intervened to save them.
All ten of Rolls wickets were taken by the young uns with Lewis Wilson and Kyle Welch leading the way with three wickets a piece. A total of 138 would not have taken too much getting, but the forecasted rain arrived as Calverton had reached 50 for no wicket and the points were shared.
1sts Fail Again
Another insipid batting display saw defeat at home to Ellerslie. Batting first and after losing three early wickets, the prospects were looking good as Richard Lee (57) and Callum Jayes (30) took the score passed a hundred without further casualties, then the all too familiar collapse followed. 110-3 quickly became 140 all out and on a wicket doing very little was never going to be enough. Four more little yellow feathery things were registered; looks like the new pond will have to be made bigger than first anticipated!
A little pride was restored after tea with Brinsley Kirkham and Matt Dean removing five Ellerslie batsmen between them as Ellerslie reached the target for the loss of six wickets.
2nds Go Down At East Bridgford
East Bridgford wracked up an impressive 250-8 as the 2nds were chasing leather for most of the afternoon. It could have been worse as E.B at one stage were 158-1 but five wickets for Kyle Welch saw some semblance of order restored.
250 was always likely to be a tall order and so it proved. Of the upper order only Ryan Evans put up any resistance scoring 40 and had it not been for Jack Kirks hard hitting 54 and John Nesters 20 not out at the end of the innings, the total would never have reached the 171 that was finally realised.
2nds Win In Run Fest
After last weeks reversal at Whatton, the Seconds bounced back to winning ways in a run frenzy at GLA against top of the table Chilwell.
Winning the toss was top priority for John Nester on a sunny humid day on a bone hard wicket & super quick outfield. And win the toss he did sending out the 'ageless' DFD & Chairman to open the innings. In complete contrast to last week, the scoreboard rattled along despite losing DFD early on, with Pickering & Jayes taking the attack to the bowlers. The score had raced along to 101 by the 16th over before Callum fell to a catch at mid on bringing Ryan Evans out to join the tiring Picko. Despite the heat the partnership blossomed eventually realising 182 runs for the third wicket from just 22 frantic overs, with Pickering smashing the ball to all parts & Ryan batting properly! With a double century looming, Picko went for one big hit too many & perished for 185. Ryan continued to take the attack to Chilwell bringing up his second consecutive half century including nine fours. As the teams looked forward to a sumptuous tea, 310-6 would surely be enough.............would it not?
Chilwells reply was a carbon copy of Calvertons innings with the numbers on the board flicking over at a hectic pace. In truth some of the bowling left a little to be desired and with a number of catches being spilled there was a possibility that the target could be chased down. Eventually the bowlers found a bit of rhythm and from 172-3 wickets fell at fairly regular intervals and Chilwell were bowled out for 256 with 13 balls remaining. Kyle Welch returning his best figures of the season so far of 4-46.
Full credit to Chilwell who gave it a real go in a super game of cricket, but 20 points for Nesters men sees them climb back into the promotion race.
MOM Derek Pickering, rolling back the years!
Sunday 6th June Washed Out
The Kwik Cricket tournament scheduled at GLA today has been cancelled due to the torrential downpours. Hopefully there will be scope to re-arrange this on a Sunday morning later in the season.
Venue Change
Please be aware that next Sundays (13th June) Newark Alliance fixture against Hucknall Rolls Royce, will now be played at Calverton.
Rolls have an issue with the availability of their ground on this date so the match has been swapped to Calverton. The return fixture on the 25th July which was scheduled to be at Calverton will now take place at the Rolls Royce ground.
